The Neosho volleyball team seemed as though they had McDonald County overmatched to begin their match Tuesday in Anderson.

The Lady Wildcats took game one 25-17 and started game two with a lead. However, the Lady Mustangs battled back to take game two and won the match in three games, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20.

“I’m disappointed that we lost,” Neosho volleyball coach Kerri Roy said. “I felt like we played hard and I still see good things, but when we get down by two or three points, we’ve got to learn who to go for a comeback.”

In game one, after an early timeout by Neosho, the Lady Wildcats went on a huge run. Michelle Forbes served nine straight points to help Neosho open up a 17-10 lead and the Lady Cats held McDonald County at bay the rest of the way for a game one win.

“I thought we started out real slow,” McDonald County volleyball coach Kacha Kuhn said. “Defensively, we weren’t getting to our blocks so our back row was out of position. We didn’t serve receive very well. Neosho was just aggressive in game one.”

Roy talked about her team’s improvement serving the ball in game one.

“Michelle (Forbes) served well,” Roy said. “We are getting better (on the serve). We are learning when to leave the ground and when to stay grounded and that has helped us a lot.”

In game two, Neosho started fast, leading 5-2 at one point, before McDonald County rallied back. After taking an 11-7 lead, McDonald County never let Neosho get closer than three points and they led by as many as nine points en route to the 25-20 win.

“I was proud of the way our girls came back in the second game,” Kuhn said. “They serve received a lot better and we were able to get into our offense.”

In game three, the teams traded points for much of the contest. In fact, the last tie was at 13-13. The Lady Mustangs went on a 7-2 run and held a 20-15 lead. Then, Neosho, powered once again by Forbes’ serve, started to mount a small comeback. The Lady Wildcats scored three straight points to make it 20-18 before McDonald County regained control and finished off the match.

Darian Stancell led the Lady Mustangs with 13 kills and two aces. Alisha Ballard added nine digs and 11 assists for McDonald County. Kenzie Dill led McDonald County with two blocks.
