The McDonald County Lady Mustangs did a good job keeping the Rogers-Heritage Lady War Eagles within arms’ length Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, they never got over the hump in a 44-33 loss in the second round of the Neosho Holiday Classic.

“It’s just really frustrating,” McDonald County coach LaDonna McClain admitted. “I thought we did a good job on offense and got some decent looks. We just couldn’t get it to go in. We’ve just been so inconsistent on offense this year.”

In the first quarter, Preslea Reece scored the game’s first basket. Then, Heritage went on a quick run to take control of the game. McDonald County rattled off five points late in the quarter to keep the contest manageable at 14-9.

In the second quarter, it looked like the Lady Mustangs might make a run and get even with Heritage. But, the Lady War Eagles’ Lacey Murray was on target from long range and hit a pair of daggers to keep McDonald County at bay. The score going into the locker room was 23-15 in favor of Heritage.

In the second half, McDonald County played with tremendous intensity on both sides of the floor. The problem was that their shots just wouldn’t go down. Because of cold shooting in the third quarter, Heritage built an 11-point lead going into the fourth quarter and allowed the Lady Mustangs to trade punches with them in the fourth to hold on for the win.

“I thought we did well defensively,” McClain said. “We’ve played this team once before and defensively I thought we did a better job this time around. We just missed too many opportunities. You’ve got to put them in.”

Reece led McDonald County with 13 points. Murray had 15, all from beyond the arc, and Brittany Ward added 14 points.

Other scorers for McDonald County were: Kenzie Dill 7, Callie Jo Shaver 5, Darian Stancell 4 and Ashton Pratt 4.

McDonald County will face Springdale, Ark., today at 3 p.m. at Crowder College.

“They are going to press and get after us,” McClain said of Springdale. “Bottom line is that we’ve got to take care of us and do the things that we can control. We can change things and try some things on defense but we are just not scoring the way we need to right now.”
