The McDonald County AAA American Legion team was swept in a doubleheader on Thursday against Joplin.

In game one, Joplin and McDonald County battled back-and-forth all the way to the end as Joplin won 14-13 on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Joplin struck first, scoring five runs in the first two innings before McDonald County countered in the middle innings.

After plating a single run in the third inning on a Kaleb Schlessman solo homer, McDonald County tacked on two more in the fourth to make the score 5-3 in favor of Joplin. After keeping Joplin scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, McDonald County exploded for seven runs in the fifth. Corbin Mabry had a two-run double while Dusty and Brandon Stites each had run-scoring singles in the inning.

Unfortunately for McDonald County, Joplin still had some life left in their bats. The home team responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the fifth to make the score 13-10.

Once again, McDonald County battled back by scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game before Joplin won in walk-off fashion.

In game two, McDonald County’s lack of pitching depth hurt them in a 13-3 loss.

“We got down early but we competed and still had a chance to win game one,” McDonald County coach Nick Martin said. “I really liked the way we competed today.”

The McDonald County Post 392 AAA team will be in action again Friday against Monett. The two seven-
inning games will be played at McDonald County High School and first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
