The Carthage Lady Tigers made quick work of Central Ozark Conference rival Neosho on Monday.
Chloe Sheppard led three Lady Tigers in double figures with 18 as Carthage defeated the Lady Wildcats, 64-39.

Carthage sprinted out to a big lead in the first quarter and never slowed down in the win.

Kaylee Morgan had 14 points in the win while Quincy Charleston added 12.

“Carthage is a good basketball team,” Neosho coach Lance Robbins said. “On a given night, they can be just as good as any basketball team in the area, but we hurt ourselves tonight.”

In the first half, Carthage forced more turnovers than Neosho had points scored.

“We dug a hole early again,” Robbins said. “We had something like 12 turnovers in the first quarter alone. Any time you turn the ball over more than you shoot the ball, that’s not good. As a team, we are just not taking care of the basketball and not making good decisions on offense.”

Trailing 34-15 at the half, Robbins issued a challenge to his team in the locker room.

“At halftime I told the girls that they had about three minutes to show me they wanted to play,” Robbins explained. “So we go out and turn the ball over and give them second and third opprotunities on the boards, so I gave some other kids a chance to play.”

A few minutes into the third quarter, after a number of Lady Wildcat turnovers halted their offense, Robbins cleared his bench and put in five new players.

Ultimately, Carthage would open the third quarter on an 18-4 run to put the game well out of reach for Neosho.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady ‘Cats showed plenty of fight, but trailing by 27 points in the final eight minutes, it was just too little, too late.

Morgan Rathmann led the Lady Wildcats on offense with eight points.

Other scorers for Neosho were: Chelsey Henry 6, Matty Liedtke 6, Catie Cummins 5, Ashley Gilion 5, Morgan Rogers 4, Kylee Hulsey 4 and Chelsie Marion 1.

Neosho (6-10) will take on Carl Junction Friday at home.
