Whether it was good Seneca defense or poor Neosho shooting, the result is the same.
Daniel Noah scored 14 points and Kyler Ng scored 13 to lead Seneca to a 49-38 win in the consolation championship at the Carthage Invitational.
“We were down in the first quarter, but by halftime we had built a one-point lead,” Neosho coach Ben Ponce said. “We hit some baskets in the third quarter but we went through a couple of late scoring droughts today. We had some open looks at the basket and couldn’t make shots. At the end, Seneca is going to do a good job of not beating themselves. They hit free throws at the end to close it out.”
Ethan Murray scored 25 points in the loss for Neosho. Remarkably, that was his lowest point output of the season thus far.
“There isn’t much balance at all right now offensively,” Ponce said. “Ethan is doing a great job scoring the ball. He even did a good job today of trying to distribute, but guys just weren’t hitting shots. We need to find a second and third scorer.”
Other scorers for Neosho were: Logan Davidson 5, Tyrell Hembree 5, Pearce Craig 3 and Dustin Flory 1.
For Seneca, the win made them 2-1 in the tournament.
“I’m thrilled to be 2-1 in that tournament,” Seneca coach Will King said. “I am proud of our kids. They showed great effort and played great defense in all three of those games. Overall, I am pleased with their play.”
Other scorers for Seneca were: Dalton Lindsey 8, Logan St. Clair 4, Elias Roelfsema 3, Zack Kelly 3, Bradley Jumper 2 and Payton Rawlins 2.
“It was a battle today with Neosho,” King said. “And I’ll tell you what, Ethan Murray can play.”
Neosho (1-2) will be back in action on Tuesday against Kickapoo. Seneca will play Miami, Okla., on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
