After the season Neosho has had on the mat this winter, Saturday’s results came as a surprise to most.
Despite three individual champions and four second place finishers, the Wildcats were edged out by Ozark for the Central Ozark Conference championship.
“We win and lose as a team and today we fell short,” Neosho coach Jeremy Phillips said. “We wrestled well but struggled to win several big matches and some of those were head to head matches with Ozark. While we lost several big ones, we won some just the same and that shouldn’t be overlooked."
River Buttram at 120 lbs., Nate Rodriguez at 126 lbs., and Ethan Pogue at 152 lbs. all won individual conference titles Saturday. They all did it with spotless records as well.
Individual results for the COC championship tournament are as follows:
106 lbs.- Montana Drum, 3-2, 3rd place
113 lbs.- Dakota McGarrah, 4-1, 2nd place
120 lbs.- River Buttram, 5-0, 1st place
126 lbs.- Nate Rodriguez, 5-0, 1st place
132 lbs.- Paxon Fowler, 3-2, 3rd place
138 lbs.- Rimo Elwise, 3-2, 5th place
145 lbs.- Sam Williams, 3-2, 2nd place
152 lbs.- Ethan Pogue, 5-0, 1st place
160 lbs.- James Townsend, 4-1, 2nd place
170 lbs.- Brandon White, 3-2, 3rd place
182 lbs.- Austin Hailey, 3-2, 5th place
195 lbs.- Jacob Brock, 2-3, 4th place
220 lbs.- Christian Lopez, 4-1, 2nd place
285 lbs.- Aaron Clardy, 3-2, 4th place
Ozark won the COC title with 301.5 points as a team. Neosho was second with 294 points and Carthage was third with 211.5.
Ozark pulled away essentially with style points. The Tigers finished the meet with 32 pins, Neosho had 23 wins by fall.
“My goal from this weekend is that we learn, grow and work to prevent this shortcoming of our goals from happening in the next two tournaments in front us — the ones that matter the most. Tomorrow is a new day.”
Neosho will compete in the district championships in Carthage on Feb. 10-11. The state meet will be held in Columbia on Feb. 16-18.
