The Neosho Wildcats dug themselves a hole early on and couldn’t overcome late in a 63-50 loss to the Joplin Eagles Tuesday in prep basketball action.

Joplin sank three early treys in the first quarter to jump out to an early lead and never relinquished.

“They came out and hit some big 3-pointers in the first half, they had six in the first half,” Neosho coach Ben Ponce said. “Second chance points are what really killed us though. We would make an initial stop and then they would get big offensive rebounds and kick out for a 3-pointer.”

Joplin was led by 27 points from Charlie Brown.

The Wildcats got things going in the third quarter. But it was too little, too late for Neosho (4-11).

“We did a lot of good things tonight,” Ponce said. “I thought we did a good job covering our zone tonight and I thought we did a good job in man but we didn’t get stops at the right time. We came out in the second half and got to the free throw line and Tyrell (Hembree) hit a big three to get us going. We have to have more of that from the get-go.”

Ethan Murray led the Wildcats with 20 points. Hembree added 10.

Other scorers for Neosho were: Logan Davidson 8, Johnny Lowe 6, Dustin Flory 5 and Blake Nagurne 1.

The Wildcats will take on Glendale on Thursday at 7 p.m. to open the Glendale Tournament.

In the junior varsity game, Neosho was led by Andy Lett with 17 points but fell to Joplin, 63-44.

In the freshman game, Logan Stuart scored a team-high 13 points and led Neosho to a 38-36 victory.
