The Neosho Wildcats tried a new lineup on Tuesday night when they hosted Parkview for a non-conference basketball game.

For a little more than a quarter it worked quite well. Then, Parkview adjusted and pulled away in the second half en route to a 64-40 win.

The Wildcats went with a four-guard lineup and moved Dustin Flory from the low block out onto the perimeter. The result was six first quarter points for the senior and a quick defensive adjustment for the Vikings.

In the second quarter, Parkview’s 2-3 zone defense started to cause problems for the Wildcats as the home team began to slowly cool off from the floor and beyond the arc.

“We aren’t getting enough post touches on offense right now,” Neosho coach Ben Ponce explained. “There were several times tonight that Logan (Davidson, junior forward) got good seals down low. We missed a couple early down there and stopped throwing it in. The ball has to go down there to at least make the defense move a little bit.”

After halftime, matters got worse for the Wildcats.

In the third quarter, Neosho scored only nine points. In the fourth quarter — four points.

“We had some good looks in the second half,” Ponce said. “The ball just didn’t go down for us. But, I do think we sort of went away from what we tried to do in the first half with finding mismatches and exploiting that. We just had too much 1-on-1. Credit to (Parkview) though. That is the most disciplined team I have seen on offense this season.”

That offensive discipline was on full display at the end of the third quarter. With just under a minute to play in the frame, Parkview walked the ball up and ran their offensive set. They held the ball on the Wildcats’ end of the court for 56 seconds before finally getting an open 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 51-36 lead going to the fourth.

For Neosho, Ethan Murray led the way with 18 points. Flory and Tyrell Hembree had 10 points apiece and Preston Johnson had two points.

Parkview was led by the trio of Erik Durham (18), Nathan Reichert (14) and Taylor Acord (10).

Neosho will travel to McDonald County on Friday night. They are scheduled to tip off the boys game at 7:30 p.m.

“We better be ready to play Friday,” Ponce said. “They are a lot like us. They have one major scorer and they play really hard. Hopefully we can play better on offense and come away with a win.”
