After a big loss at the hands of Webb City in the opening round of the Carl Junction Classic, the Seneca Lady Indians righted the ship and finished 2-1 in the season-opening tournament.

In the second round, Molli Cooper and Bailey Skelton each scored 17 points to lead Seneca to a 64-54 win over the hosts, Carl Junction.

“We played well on offense and rebounded the ball well,” Seneca coach Bob Coffey said.

Other scorers for Seneca were: Mirana Heath 14, Annie Howard 9, Rachel Butterfield 5 and Mara Butler 2. Skelton had a double-double with 12 rebounds.

Saturday, Seneca faced the Carl Junction junior varsity team in the consolation championship.

Behind 14 points apiece from Skelton and Heath, Seneca edged the Lady Bulldogs, 49-42.

“It was a matinee game,” Coffey said. “We played with some very tired legs from the night before. That’s not to take anything away from the Carl Junction JV, they had some very good young players. But we’re not real deep and you could just tell we were getting tired.”

Other scorers for Seneca were: Butler 8, Cooper 6, Howard 6 and Butterfield 1.

Seneca (2-1) does not return to action until Dec. 12 vs. Diamond.
