After a tightly contested first half, the Seneca Lady Indians looked like they had pulled away from Big 8 Conference rival Cassville in the third quarter Tuesday. But, after a thrilling comeback by the Lady Wildcats, Seneca saw the game tied at 45 with only a few seconds left.
Bailey Skelton got to be the heroine. The sophomore hit a runner from the right side of the lane with four seconds left and Cassville’s last second heave didn’t fall, allowing Seneca to escape with a 47-45 win.
“This was a big win for our program,” Seneca coach Bob Coffey said. “I was pleased with the bounce back effort after not playing real well last night. In spite of it getting a little bit ugly in the fourth quarter with a lead that we let dwindle, Cassville has a good ball club with a lot of seniors. Our underclassmen, although they made some mistakes, they found a way to win and that’s all you can ask for.”
Mirana Heath led four Seneca players in double figures with 17 points. Molli Cooper had 12 points and Skelton and Annie Howard each had 11.
For a team as young as Seneca, the Neosho Holiday Classic is valuable for gaining maturity in a short amount of time. Although there is a negative aspect to it as well.
“This particular season it is both good and bad for us. It’s good in the sense that you are going to get a lot of experience over a short period of time,” Coffey said. “This year it’s hard for us because we are so thin in our rotation. We didn’t play a lot of girls today, but we are going to have to really dig deep in these last two games.”
Seneca will face Neosho today at noon at Neosho Middle School. Neosho and Seneca played earlier this season with the Lady Indians claiming a five-point win at home.
