As losses go, this was about as impressive as it gets.
The Seneca Lady Indians (Class 3) took Webb City (Class 5 powerhouse) to the wire Thursday night at Seneca High School. But the home team fell just short in a 54-50 loss.
Seneca, playing without Bailey Skelton due to illness, was led by Molli Cooper’s 26 points.
“Molli may have had the best game she’s ever played tonight,” Seneca coach Bob Coffey said.
Cooper hit three 3-pointers and drained all seven of her free throws.
Webb City is renowned for its full court, trapping defense. Seneca’s freshman and sophomore guards were able to completely neutralize that trap.
“We actually handled the press well enough to get them out of it,” Coffey said. “After they sat back and played half court defense on us, we went back and forth. We were really able to play with them.”
A late 3-pointer by Mikaela Burgess of Webb City took the wind out of the sails of a Seneca rally with less than two minutes to play in the game. Burgess finished with a game-high 29 points for the Lady Cardinals.
Other scorers for Seneca were: Mirana Heath 13, Amber Van Wagner 7 and Rachel Butterfield 4.
The Lady Indians will be back in action on Tuesday and it doesn’t get easier for them as they travel to Purdy.
