The Seneca baseball squad took their show on the road this weekend and played in the Monett Tournament.

The Indians played against East Newton on Friday and defeated the Patriots 17-3.

In that game, Eric Esposito was the winning pitcher after pitching just two innings and allowing a single run.

Offensively, the Indians were led by Payton Rawlins who went 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBI.

On Saturday, Seneca played Purdy and Monett.

In the game against Purdy, the Indians fell behind early before mounting a comeback to take the lead in the third inning. Then, in the top of the seventh inning, Purdy took the lead back, forcing Seneca to go to work in the final half inning.

The Indians scratched across two runs in the final frame to win 7-6.

“(Purdy) got on top fast and we battled back to take that lead,” Seneca coach Chris Yust said. “Our kids battled back again in the seventh and got the win.”

Braxton Graham went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the win for Seneca.

In the night game, Seneca played the tournament host, Monett.

In that contest, seven innings wasn’t enough as the game went into extra innings.

In the eighth and final inning, Monett scored three runs to take a 9-6 lead going into the bottom half of the inning.

Once again, the Seneca lineup went to work.

The Indians scored four runs and won the game in walk-off fashion 10-9 to secure an undefeated weekend.

“We gave up three quick runs in the first inning,” Yust said. “We scored three runs in the first and second inning to take the lead, but our kids had to battle again in the eighth. Our kids didn’t quit all day. A lot of players contributed to these wins today.”

Seneca was led offensively in the game against Monett by Jacob Rhoads who went 3-for-5 with four RBI.
Seneca now sits at 7-1 on the season.

The next game for the Indians will be Monday in Carthage for the Carthage Tournament. Seneca’s first opponent at the tournament will be Webb City at 7 p.m.
