The scoreboard at the end of Tuesday night’s dual between Neosho and Carthage does not reflect the battles that took place on the mat.
Neosho dropped a handful of close matches and two matches were decided in overtime, but the Wildcats tamed the visiting Tigers, 40-16.
“It was definitely a battle. And we knew it would be that way coming in, I have a great amount of respect for Carthage coaching staff and wrestlers. We knew they would step on the mat ready to fight and we knew we needed to meet that challenge,” Neosho coach Jeremy Phillips said. “For the most part I felt we did pretty well in going out and wrestling our match. I was pleased with our guys. We need to evaluate though. There were a few matches that could have gone either way and we are going to see those guys again in the conference tournament and we’ve got them in our district and obviously at state. If we stay satisfied with how we did tonight, they are going to come back in the matches we won and get us when it matters most. That’s what our kids need to understand. The matches we lost were some close battles. I believe if we work and look at a few things, we can change those results. It’s time to get back in the (practice) room and get back to work. It’s a constant process of evaluation and getting better.”
Match results from the dual are as follows:
Dakota Jones (Car) def. Austin Lewis by pin at 3:13
Dakotah McGarrah (Neo) def. Tyler Harden by 7-2 decision

“We can’t get comfortable,” Phillips said. “I keep telling the kids in practice to crave the uncomfortable and stay away from that warm and fuzzy feeling during practice time. That’s the only way we will reach the peak we are chasing. Thursday we will go with a split squad against Hillcrest. That will give some of our younger JV kids and guys that have been hurt the chance to wrestle in a varsity match in front of the home crowd and get them hungry for the years to come. Hillcrest and CJ will wrestle in the middle and then we will take on Carl Junction.”
Thursday will also be Youth Wrestling Night. The youth wrestlers will put on a demo for the fans and they will be recognized for placing second at state last season.
The first dual will begin at 5:30 p.m.
