The East Newton softball team pulled one upset, but fell short against a familiar foe in the Crowder College Tournament this weekend.
The third seed coming out of pool play, the Lady Patriots upset second-seeded Purdy 6-3 Saturday morning.
Purdy was up 3-0 before the Lady Patriots rattled off all six runs in the fifth inning to secure the victory. East Newton scored all its runs with two outs on the board. Shawna Cottle, Jenna Bandy and Kristen Gardner all singled to load the bases.
Sam Mahurin singled to drive in the first run, before Kenzie Reigle hit a two-run double. Shelby Carrell followed with a two-run triple. Katlyn Butler’s RBI single capped the scoring.
Keslie Wright earned the win striking out three and scattering five hits.
The Lady Patriots advanced to the semifinals and faced Cassville for the second time in three days in the semifinals. Much like Thursday’s loss, errors plagued East Newton again in a 10-1 loss.
The Lady Wildcats of Cassville went up 6-0 in this game before the Lady Patriots got on the board in the fourth inning.
Singles by Carrell and Mahurin, and an RBI single by Megan Judd, helped East Newton tally a run. Wright struck out three and walked one in the game for East Newton (2-4).
The championship game saw Reeds Spring win 12-2 over Cassville.
The Lady Patriots return to action at 5 p.m. Monday hosting Webb City.
