It was an evening of positive things for the Neosho wrestling program Thursday night.

The last positive of the night came when the Wildcats completed their double dual sweep over Hillcrest and Carl Junction.

The Neosho WXT (Wrestling XTreme) was honored for its accomplishments at the youth level before the Wildcats took the mat.

The Wildcats had five seniors take the floor in their final chance to wrestle in front of a packed house of home fans. In those matches, Neosho was 5-0.

“I was definitely pleased with how these seniors came in here tonight and closed out their careers in this gym tonight,” Neosho head coach Jeremy Phillips said. “The atmosphere is one that is unique to wrestling in the area because wrestling doesn’t usually get a lot of followers and support. The teams that come here always comment that they wish they had this kind of atmosphere.”

In their first dual, Neosho squared off with Hillcrest. Phillips used this dual as an opportunity to get some younger wrestlers varsity mat time.

They took full advantage of their opportunity.

The Wildcats didn’t surrender a single match en rout to dismantling the Hornets, 83-0.
Results were as follows:

Austin Lewis pinned Chris Johnson
Montana Drum pinned Ron Hudson
Ryan Rhinehart pinned Jeremy Nelson
Jason Box pinned Ian Stokes
Rimo Elwise defeated Ben Kerr by 23-8 major decision
Garrick Fausett pinned Skyler Rea
Chance Branstetter pinned Daniel Reid
Brandon White pinned Jordan Minsly
Austin Hailey pinned Mike Albrecht
Aaron Clardy pinned Devin Devalti

“Tonight, wrestling our JV kids in that Hillcrest dual is something that will make them hungry in the off season to be the guy next year,” Phillips said. “You’ve always got to be thinking about your upcoming kids. If we’re going to reload as a program and not rebuild, we’ve got to have kids coming in during the off season and working hard. With that being said, I was extremely pleased with how the kids performed on the mat. I did not think that they did well Tuesday against Carthage. We focused from the moment we walked through the door to get our minds right and go battle. The JV did a great job setting the tone for the entire evening.”

Neosho followed up that dominant performance with another. Neosho won the first five matches on the dual with Carl Junction and never looked back on its way to seven pins and a 64-12 victory over the Bulldogs.

“I thought the varsity did a good job closing out the home slate on a positive note for this senior class,” Phillips said.

Neosho is now 10-1 on the season in duals. The Wildcats will travel to Columbus, Kan., on Tuesday for a double dual with Columbus and Caney, Kan.

“The only thing that’s in our way right now is the illness problems we’ve been dealing with,” Phillips said. “Jared Brock has an ankle sprain but he’s one who is sick too. We are working with him to be ready when he feels better. I feel like we are where we need to be. We are in the climb part of the season. If you let injuries and illness bring you down, you are not going to peak at the right time. As soon as these guys get healthy it will be time to top off the gas tank and look to make a run for some hardware.”
