Thursday proved to be a tough day for the East Newton softball team as it dropped a doubleheader in the Crowder College Tournament.
The Lady Patriots lost another close game in the opener against Southwest, 4-3, and then had a few defensive miscues in a 6-1 loss to Cassville.
In the third game played at Crowder’s softball field, Cassville won 7-1 over Southwest.
The Lady Patriots fell behind 2-0 to the Southwest Lady Trojans, but rallied to get the game tied, before losing in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning, the Lady Patriots (1-3) tied the game up. Jenna Bandy doubled and was joined on the bases by Sam Mahurin, who was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base, before Katlyn Butler hit a two-run single to tie the game.
Southwest regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning, but East Newton tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh. The top of the seventh saw Shawna Cottle single with one out. Walks to Kristen Gardner and Bandy loaded the bases.
A two-base error and a ground ball allowed the Lady Trojans to win the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Keslie Wright was tagged with the loss, striking out six and scattering six hits in seven innings. It was the second one-run loss this season for East Newton.
In the second game, a bundle of errors hurt East Newton.
Cassville scored a run off two errors in the first inning, and then scored three runs off two errors and a hit in the third inning.
The Lady Patriots’ Mahurin hit an RBI double in the fifth inning for the team’s lone run. Cassville tallied the game’s final runs in the sixth inning on two more errors.
Wright gave up only four hits – East Newton had seven as a team – and struck out four but was tagged with the loss.
The six-team tournament picks up today with a tripleheader starting at 2 p.m. with Purdy playing Reeds Spring. At 3:30 p.m., Reeds Spring plays Strafford and wraps up with Purdy vs. Strafford at 5 p.m.
