The Chanute Comets football team used a powerful rushing attack to roll to a 38-6 victory over McDonald County Friday night.
The Comets, a two-time conference champion in Southeast Kansas League, put up three touchdowns in the first quarter and held a 28-0 lead by halftime over the Mustangs.
Chanute running back Alec Haight threw a touchdown pass to Griffin Williams for 44-yards, the first play of the game for the Comets.
Eric Bowman, filling in for the starting running back, broke out for touchdown runs of 82 and 15 yards to give Chanute an early 21-0 advantage.
Bowman scored on an 86-yard run in the second quarter to boost the Comets’ lead to 28-0 at halftime.
“We finally settled down a bit after the first quarter,” McDonald County coach Chris Gwartney said. “We didn’t play good at the start, but we kept fighting and battled back.”
Chanute added a field goal by Andrew Parish and a 2-yard touchdown run by Haight.
The Mustangs (0-2) got on the board in the fourth quarter when Damien DeSantiago scored on a 2-yard run.
Chanute’s Bowman had 11 carries for 202 yards and the three touchdowns. Overall, the team ran for 284 yards and had 394 yards of total offense.
The Mustangs racked up 321 yards of total offense, including 219 on the ground. Dustin Resz had 84 yards. Quarterback Garrett Wilson threw for 102 yards.
McDonald County returns home Friday, hosting Gravette, Ark., at 7:30 p.m.
