Jared Schoonover is the new head football coach at Neosho High School.

The Neosho R-5 School Board made the announcement after conducting a special meeting at noon today.

Schoonover takes over for Shawn Flannigan, who led the football Wildcats to back-to-back district titles in his two seasons as Neosho head football coach. Flannigan accepted the heading football coach position at Rogers (Ark.) High School for the 2010 season.

This will be Schoonover’s first stint as a varsity head football coach.

“Although he has not had any varsity coaching experience, his knowledge and his ability to work with the kids and get kids out is going to be a very huge positive for us,” said Darren Cook, principal at Neosho High School. “His relationships with the kids are established.”

Schoonover (pronounced scoon-over) served as an assistant coach on the offensive side of the ball for the Wildcats this past season. He came to Neosho after serving as an assistant football coach at Bentonville (Ark.) High School. At Bentonville, Schoonover coached two years as the freshmen offensive coordinator and then three at the varsity level as a wide receiver coach. He stepped out of the coaching profession in 2008 to work in private industry.

Schoonover is a social studies teacher with a degree from Missouri Southern State University. A native of Mound City, Mo., he played football one year at West Texas A&M, before heading to Southern. In 2001, he did a graduate assistant coaching stint at Los Angeles Valley College, where he worked with tight ends.

According to school officials, there were three internal candidates for the head coach position, and one backed out during the interview process. The names of those interviewed were not released by the school district.

The Neosho Daily News will have a full interview and coverage of this story in its Wednesday edition.
