Two days after getting the team’s first victory of the season, the Neosho Lady Wildcats got the first “official” victory on Saturday.
Neosho bounced back from a loss to Joplin early Saturday to dispatch Springfield Central, 5-0, and claim third place in the Neosho Tournament, held Friday and Saturday at Lions Field.
Neosho finished with a 2-1 record in the six-team pool play tournament.
Joplin pulled out a 4-0 victory over Van Buren, Ark., to claim the championship.
As mentioned in Thursday’s edition of the Daily News, the tournament was slated to start on Thursday with Neosho facing off against Joplin McAuley. Due to a scheduling conflict, McAuley would only have had four players available, so they pulled out of the tournament.
The Neosho JV was inserted and, since the two already played a scrimmage, Neosho was given a win.
The Neosho JV then drew Joplin on Friday night and lost 10-0.
On Saturday, Neosho opened up against Joplin’s varsity and lost 3-0.
“It was a good game,” said Neosho coach Laura Schisler. “We had a bunch of chances, we just didn’t finish. I know the score doesn’t show it was a close game, but we played better than we have.”
Neosho carried over that momentum into the third-place game against the Lady Bulldogs.
So after playing three games and scoring only one goal in a 240 minute stretch, Neosho made up for it against Central. Though it still took some time.
With 13 minutes left in the first half, Jackie Fields scored a goal for Neosho to it a 1-0 lead.
Neosho rolled from there to pull out the 5-0 victory.
Amelia White scored a pair of goals, while twin sister, Melanie, tallied her first goal of the season.
The final goal came from Stephanie Wilson.
Schisler noted that Wilson was moved up to forward, giving the team three at that spot, and helped spark the offense this weekend.
The Neosho defense was also rather stingy, as Springfield Central wasn’t credited for a single shot on goal.
“For the first time this year we look like a team,” said Schisler. “Everything fell into place and things are starting to click.”
Neosho is now 2-3 on the season.
“I’m glad we got our first wins of the season and I’m glad to see us scoring,” said Schisler. “We haven’t had a lot of offense and it has been frustrating.”
Neosho has three games slated this week, starting Monday when Joplin McAuley, with all of its players, visits at 4:30 p.m. for a varsity-only game.
Later this week, Neosho hosts Nixa and Parkview for games at Lions Field.
