Webb City uses big inning to beat Seneca

A big second inning propelled the visiting Webb City Cardinals to a 13-6 victory over Seneca in prep baseball action.

The Cardinals, ranked No. 5 in Class 3, broke open a scoreless game with an eight-run second inning.

Webb City scored eight of its 13 runs in the game with two outs on the board.
In the second inning, Patrick Drake hit a two-run homer, the start of the big inning. Spencer Aggus singled in a run and Austin Lepper, who scored on Drake’s home run, came through with an RBI single. Chance Sossoman added an RBI double in the frame, while Drake finished the scoring by hitting a two-run single.

Of the eight runs, six came with two outs on the board.

Seneca (12-6) came back with five runs in the third inning to make the game closer. Matt Wilkes drove in the first run for Seneca on an RBI single, scoring Ryan Fry, who led off with a single. Patrick Bennett had a two-run single to score Eric Esposito, who singled, and Wilkes, making it 8-3. Cody Badgwell had an RBI groundout to score Maverick Sonis, who was hit by a pitch and then Bennett scored on a wild pitch to cap the inning.

Webb City and Seneca traded runs in the fifth inning, as the three-run deficit stayed intact. Cameron Beaver had an RBI double to score Aggus in the top of the inning, making it 9-5. Sonis walked, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning, making it 9-6.

Webb City tacked on four runs over the final two innings to secure the win. Drake had a two-out single in the sixth inning and scored on Jordan Hickman’s RBI single. In the seventh inning, Aggus reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on Beaver’s walk. Sossoman then hit a three-run homer to cap the scoring.

Sossoman, a Wichita State signee, was 3-for-5 with 5 RBI. Drake was 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. Aggus was 4-for-5 with three runs, an RBI and six stolen bases. Lepper and Hickman each had three hits, while Beaver had a single and a double.

Jerick Swarens started and threw all seven innings for the Cardinals (15-5). He gave up five hits, six runs and struck out five.

Ryan Fry started for Seneca and threw all seven innings. He gave up 13 runs (eight earned) and struck out two, while giving up 17 hits.

Seneca returns to action Tuesday hosting East Newton in a Big 8 Conference game.
