For the fifth straight week, the Diamond football team held a lead in its game.
Unfortunately, for the fourth straight week, the lead didn’t stick.
On Friday, Diamond jumped ahead 8-0 on the road against Lockwood, but fell 47-16 in a Spring River Valley Conference game.
After a scoreless first quarter for both teams, Diamond got a 14-yard touchdown run by Cameron Scribner. C.P. Bycroft ran in the conversion and the Wildcats were ahead 8-0.
Diamond then booted the ball on the kickoff and Elijah Lasater picked it up for Lockwood. He dashed 62 yards for a touchdown.
“We got turnovers on their first two offensive possessions and then we went up 8-0 on them,” said Diamond coach Derek Scroggins. “After the kickoff, it seemed like we hung our heads and couldn’t get things going.”
Lockwood missed the conversion, so it trailed 8-6.
However, the Tigers (2-4 overall, 1-3 in SRVC) tallied 28 points in the second quarter to grab a 28-8 lead.
Blake Abbiatti combined for three touchdowns for Lockwood the rest of the quarter. He ran for a 3-yard score to make it 12-8. He added an 8-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Preston. The same duo connected for the 2-point conversion, making it 20-8.
Cody Triplett hauled in a 27-yard pass from Abbiatti late in the quarter. Abbiatti threw to Preston for a second straight conversion, making it 28-8 at halftime.
Diamond went for an onside kick in the opening part of the second half and it backfired a bit.
Lasater picked it up and ran it back 50 yards for a touchdown, his second kickoff return for a score in the game.
Later in the third quarter, Lasater hauled in a 13-yard pass from Abbiatti. Arek Grisham kicked the extra point, making it 41-8. Patrick Whittington’s 2-yard run gave Lockwood a 47-8 lead.
Late in the third quarter, Bycroft ran for a 15-yard score and ran in the conversion for the final points of the game.
“We just couldn’t get anything going,” said Scroggins. “Lockwood played well. They were more physical than I expected. Now, we got Miller. They got to be thinking if Miller doesn’t win the state championship, it is a disappointment. They are the best team on our schedule.”
The Cardinals, ranked No. 3 in Class 1, visit Diamond for a 7 p.m. game Friday.
