Playing at home for the first time in a while — August 29 was the last day at home — the vagabond Crowder College Roughriders soccer team looked for its first home win.
That wait will have to go a while longer.
A goal by Michael Brennan in the 109th minute — in double overtime — lead Blue River Community College from Kansas City to a 1-0 win over Crowder in a Region XVI game played at Lions Field.
In the regulation 90 minutes, neither team found the net, but both teams had shots. Crowder had an opportune time with a throw in deep in Blue River territory, but goalie Eric Byrd made the save.
Neither team had much luck in the first overtime and it appeared to be the same in the second extra session. The speakers sounded and the announcer said two minutes were left.
However, a minute later, the game was officially over.
On a free kick, the TrailBlazers got a shot off that hit the goal post and deflected out in the goalie box. Brennan was there and booted it in the top part of the goal. He then, in celebration, ran around and took his jersey off before being mobbed by teammates.
“We played good for 109 minutes,” said Crowder coach Brad Smith.
“I don’t know what happened there. I don’t know why they had a breakaway, so we will talk about it. It is part of the growing pains with a new program.
“Our kids played hard and have all year.”
Crowder is now 2-5-3. Blue River improved to 4-6.
The Roughriders play Friday in Union, Mo., against East Central Community College in another Region XVI game.
