The East Newton Patriots football team got a chance to see many of its young players, many of whom will get starting assignments this Friday, when Mount Vernon visits for the home opener, in action Friday night in Pleasant Hope.
The Patriots took part in a jamboree against Pleasant Hope, Marionville and Buffalo, like East Newton, smaller schools.
“I though we did OK,” East Newton coach Tom Ellis said summing up his team’s performance against the three other schools. “We have a lot of inexperience and a lot of new kids. We made a lot of mistakes.”
East Newton tied with all three of its opponents, by scoring a touchdown in each of the three scrimmage, while also giving up a score.
Against the Marionville Comets, Sam Mansfield made a big impact by rushing for a 35-yard run gain from his spot at fullback. That set up quarterback Justin Heckman’s 5-yard touchdown run.
Against Pleasant Hope, running back Leroy Williams scored from 10-yards out.
In its final set of scrimmage, Heckman scored on a short touchdown run. Amon Allphin had a big run to set up the score.
The Patriots did get some bad news as Scilar Gilbert was injured in the jamboree.
“The kids flew around to the ball and played with great effort ... we are just green,” Ellis said.
