Anderson, Mo. -

One thing is for sure, the Neosho Nighthawks don’t tire easily.

After falling in 11 innings on Monday to Carthage, the Nighthawks stormed back from a six-run deficit to beat Webb City 16-8 Tuesday during the American Legion District 15 playoffs at McDonald County High School.

“We had all the excuses in the world to lay down and die,” said Neosho coach Eddie Crupper about the Nighthawks’ early woes. “After last night’s epic battle we had a lot of tired people. We asked for some people to come in and pitch who haven’t pitched regularly for us.”

Alex Wise tossed 6 2/3 innings in relief, while the Nighthawks’ offense exploded for 15 runs over the final seven innings.

Neosho, 24-12 overall, advanced to play Carl Junction, which beat McDonald County in the afternoon contest, at 7:30 p.m. today.

Webb City’s season comes to a disappointing end.

“You’re going to have your hands full any time you play a nine inning ballgame,” said Webb City coach Shawn Mayes. “They (Neosho) can hit up and down their lineup. I knew it would take more than seven runs to win.”

Neosho, which outhit Webb City 18-7, broke a scoreless tie with a run in its half of the second. Austin Paul connected for a two-out RBI single to left field, allowing Tanner Pogue to score from second after reaching on a double.

Webb City swiftly jumped on the board in the bottom of the second.

Miller issued a leadoff walk to Austin Lepper which, as so often as it does, resulted in a big inning for Webb City, while proving disastrous for the Nighthawks.

Center fielder Mack Kyle delivered the key blow.

With nobody out and the bases full, Kyle drove a double off the left-field fence, scoring two runs to give Webb City a three-run, 4-1, lead. Kyle’s blast nearly left, but the ballpark managed to contain it.

“For the last two weeks Mack has been hitting the ball well for us,” Mayes said. “I’ve been really impressed with the job he has done.”

It could have been worse.

A lot worse.

Three walks and two errors led to three more runs, prompting Crupper to pull Wilson after only 1 1/3 innings of work.

Alex Wise came in and cleaned up the damage after Wilson departed with the bases loaded.

Braxton Perry was picked off at third for the second out and Jerry Workman was retired via strikeout to end the inning.

“Alex Wise did a tremendous job for us,” Crupper explained. “Kyle Dickens did a great job of closing it out for us.”

The Nighthawks’ offense picked up Wilson in the top of the third.

Koty Dowell, hitting last in the Nighthawks’ order, crushed a solo homer over the left-field wall to leadoff the inning. Kyle Dickens followed with a three-run shot to cap a four-run inning for Neosho after Ty Anderson and Wilson reached on and infield single and an error.

Carter Marion ripped a game-tying double in the fourth to get Miller off the hook.

From there, Marion opened the game up with a long ball in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
