The Greenfield Wildcats football roster may not have many players, but the ones they do have sure are talented ones.
The No. 9 ranked team in Class 1, flexed its offensive prowess on Friday, rolling to a 59-6 over Diamond in the season opener and Spring River Valley Conference openers for both teams.
Greenfield had six different players score touchdowns and from passing the ball to the ‘bread-and-butter’ for Greenfield, running the ball, the Wildcats had control of the game.
Greenfield went up 14-0 in the first quarter as quarterback Jordan Bryant accounted for both touchdowns. Bryant ran for a 16-yard score and then tossed a 35-yard touchdown pass to John Riley.
Greenfield opened up its lead in a hurry in the second quarter, getting two late touchdowns to expand its lead to 33-0.
“They piled up the points late, we had a couple of picks (interceptions) toward the end of the first half,” Diamond coach Aaron Davied said.
Bryant ran for a 24-yard touchdown and then connected with Riley for a 69-yard touchdown. In between those two touchdowns, Jamie Gray ran for a 6-yard touchdown and then scored the 2-point conversion himself.
Greenfield expanded its lead to 59-0 by scoring four touchdowns in the third quarter.
Riley, who had caught two touchdowns, ran for a 23-yard score. Then, three other running backs found their way to paydirt. Tyler Ball ran for a 1-yard touchdown. Montana Hembree ran for a 4-yard touchdown and Tyler Boyd scored on a 33-yard run.
Diamond scored its only touchdown of the night in the third quarter when Jarren ‘Pepper’ Reinhart broke open for a 60-yard touchdown.
“I was proud of the kids, I thought we played hard,” Davied said. “We didn’t execute extremely well, but we were out-athlete-ed by them. We didn’t match up too well against them. We are big and strong and they are very fast.”
For highlights on defense, Davied pointed to T.K. Xiong, who had eight tackles, forced a fumble and also recovered a fumble.
“He is about 5-3 or 5-4 and 165 pounds and he was hard for them to block,” Davied said.
Reinhart, a sophomore, ran for 101 yards with 13 carries. Clifton ‘CP’ Bycroft finished second in yards, with 20 yards on four carries.
Tyler Horton was 2-for-6 passing for 11 yards for Diamond.
