There were many highlights for the McDonald County Mustangs football team Friday in its jamboree at Kelly Field in Aurora, though none bigger than its play against Branson, a playoff team in 2008.

McDonald County played to a 0-0 tie after a 24-play scrimmage with the Pirates.

“I was real happy how we played, we got a lot of good things, we had a few mental mistakes, but overall, was very pleased,” McDonald County coach Sean Price said. “On defense, we played really well. We held Branson out of the end zone and gave them only one first down. We bent, but we didn’t break.”

McDonald County, in each of its 12 plays on offense and defense, had the varsity out for eight plays and the JV out for four plays. The Mustangs got down to the 3-yard line against Branson, but didn’t score.

Against Aurora, Nelson Boyd had a 25-yard run and scored on a 10-yard run — capping a 3-play drive.

“We were able to give a lot of kids playing time,” Price said of the Aurora set.

Against Kickapoo, McDonald County held the Chiefs scoreless while scoring on a passing play from quarterback Cameron Farmer to John Graham for 10-yards.

Sy Morris had an interception.

The Mustangs host Monett at 7 p.m. Friday in the first game of the season.
