The Neosho freshman baseball team wrapped up its season with a two-game sweep over visiting Webb City Tuesday night at Roy B. Shaver Stadium.
Neosho pounded out a 6-3 victory in the opener and then had a one-hit shutout in the nightcap, winning 1-0.
The visiting Cardinals led 3-0 after two innings in the first game, before the Wildcats (10-6-1) scored all of their runs in the fourth inning.
Zane Culp started the inning with a single and scored on Jacob Patterson’s RBI double. Blake Stauffer walked and Jared Brown reached on a fielder’s choice. Tyler Marion walked to load the bases with one out.
Jacob Rickman had a two-run single to score Stauffer and Brown. Matt Link followed with a triple to bring home Marion and Rickman. Carter Boatright then singled to score Link.
Patterson threw 4 1/3 innings for Neosho, giving up three hits, three runs and walking one. Stauffer threw the final 2/3 of an inning and walked one.
Ironically, Webb City didn’t strike out at all in the first game.
“In the first game, Jacob pitched almost a complete game with a blister falling off of his finger,” said Neosho coach Todd Moffett.
In the second game, Neosho southpaw A.J. Enloe dominated from the start as he gave up only one hit to Webb City. He didn’t give up a walk and didn’t get a strikeout and Neosho didn’t have an error, so only one base runner reached safely.
“I was really excited for him,” said Moffett. “He has thrown well all year and we always put him in a tough situation. This was the first time he went out from the start and showed what he could do.”
The Wildcats got their only run in the third inning. Wyatt Archer reached on a two-base error and scored on Jared Hill’s RBI triple.
Hill had two triples and Jacob Barnes had two doubles to account for all of Neosho’s hits.
“I was tickled by how we finished the year,” said Moffett. “We struggled in the last week, but we seemed to put it all together.”
