Saturday was perhaps the shortest track meet, in minutes, ever held for Neosho High School.

The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats, competing in the Class 4 District 6 meet at John F. Kennedy Stadium at Parkview High School in Springfield, had their meet cut short due to bad weather early Saturday.

The event saw the 100-meter, 110-meter and 300-meter hurdle preliminary races ran and a handful of the field events underway when lightning postponed the meet.

After a long way, the games committee decided not to risk it and call off the meet.

“It was lightning, thundering and chilly and the forecast called for another storm,” said Neosho coach Harry Lineberry, a member of the games committee. “And we were under a tornado watch until 7 p.m. We talked about it for about 30 minutes in the press box because we kept delaying the meet over and over again. We would got five or 10 minutes without a lightning strike and then we would have one and have to wait another 30 minutes.”

Neosho will return to JFK Stadium Monday to complete the district meet, starting at noon.

Of the few events ran, Neosho teams were doing well.

Dimitra “Meter” Boman ran a 15.47 to take first place in the prelims and advance to the finals. Emily Paullus made the finals in the 300-meter hurdles and Ethan Adams made the finals in the 110-meter hurdles, running a 16.6.

Nevada Districts

What was already a different track district from the apsect of a move from Carl Junction to Nevada last week, the Class 3 District 6 meet was called off after a cominbation of  hail, thunderstorms and lightning in the Nevada area.

According to the Nevada Daily Mail, the track meet got underway with preliminary races and field events, including the boys’ shot put, but a fast moving storm a little before noon forced the postponement.

The meet will be made up at 11 a.m. Monday.
