A stiff wind once again hampered Carthage’s golfers on Thursday during the Class 3 District 6 golf tournament at Briarbrook Golf and Country Club.
It didn’t seem to bother Erin Campbell.
Campbell, one of four senior strikers competing for a spot at state, shot a 3-over par 75 to take medalist honors. Campbell had the same score two days prior during the Southwest Conference tournament. The weather, though, was much more favorable on Tuesday.
Campbell joined teammate Trevor Freeman, who shot 1-under 71 to win the SWC tournament, as Carthage’s second medalist winner in as many tournaments.
As a team, Carl Junction took first place to win the district championship with a team score of 325. Carthage and Nevada each tied with a 331 for second place, but Nevada took the second place trophy due to a better score at No. 5 singles.
The remainder of the team standings were: Republic, 342; Cassville, 351; Webb City, 359; Seneca, 374; Monett, 375; McDonald County, 398; Aurora, 420.
Campbell used a par approach, while taking each hole and each shot one at a time to counter the extreme conditions facing the golfers.
“I had set a game plan for each hole,” explained Campbell. “I wanted to make sure not to bogey.”
It worked.
Players had to prepare for the strong winds from the onset. Coaches preached a slow approach to the day.
“The way conditions were, Erin shot a great round,” said coach Lowell Catron.
Other state qualifiers included: Carl Junction’s Jordan Burks, Chris Moudy, Adam Mertens, Reilly Hughes and Josh Davis; Nevada’s Tyler Gast, Brandon Davis and Zach Braucher; Carthage’s Brady Bridges and Trevor Freeman; Republic’s Kyle Knierrim; Webb City’s Andrew Maier and Adam Williams and Cassville’s Taylor VanZandt.
Seneca’s Steven Adams shot an 87 and was one of four golfers who missed the cut by a stroke. Adams shot a 44 on the front nine and came back with a 43 on the back nine.Other scores for Seneca included 94s from Coltin Durbin and Luke Balls. David Wright shot a 99, while Tyler Patton carded a 103.
McDonald County’s low score came from Levi Stone an Josh Pottorff, who each shot a 95. Dustin Shurback shot a 101, while Adam Hinson shot a 107. Josh McMahan rounded out the field for the Mustangs with a 152.
The state tournament is set for May 12-13 at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield.
