Anderson, Mo. -

The sixth-seeded Cassville Post 118 American Legion baseball team picked up another upset victory Monday evening.

Cassville, backed by a strong offensive surge early, pulled out a 13-8 victory over No. 2 seeded Carl Junction Post 781 in the semifinals of the American Legion District 15 Tournament at McDonald County High School.

It was the second time in three days that Cassville made some noise. They opened up by thumping No. 3 seeded Webb City Post 322, 15-2.

Cassville fell behind 2-0 to Post 781, but broke the game open thanks to a six-run third inning that set the toe.

An error on Jake Nolan’s grounder led to a run, while Ricky Vanderpool grounded out to bring home another run, tying the game. Cody Pierson hit a two-run home run. Kelby Haynes added a two-run single and Jody Caveness had an RBI single to cap the scoring.

In the sixth inning, Josh Hartin hit an RBI double for Cassville, making it 9-3.

Post 781 put up quite a rally in the top of the eighth inning to get back in the game thanks to some clutch doubles.

Jake Stevenson got on first by getting hit by a pitch. Jon Michel followed by getting an infield single. Jack Luton followed with an RBI single, making it 9-4. Matt Thompson walked to load the bases with one out. Logan Deem and Travis Green hit back-to-back, two-run doubles to cut into the lead, making it 9-8.

Carl Junction had a chance to tie the game, but left runners stranded at third base and second base.

Cassville got a three-run homer run from Travis Northern in his first at-bat of the game to make it 12-8. Haynes was hit by a pitch and scored on Caveness’ RBI double.

Michael Baker got the victory for Cassville, who plays Carthage in the winner’s bracket final.
