Pittsburg, Kan. -

The visiting Neosho Nighthawks American Legion baseball team got a bit of revenge Monday night.

The Post 163 Nighthawks came into JayCee Park and pulled out a 10-4 victory over Pittsburg Post 64 in a nine-inning contest between the team squads.

The meeting was the second of the season for the two clubs, as each meet in the first game of the season in the Bob Ratzlaff Pittsburg Wood Bat Tournament earlier this summer, with Post 64 pulling out a 7-2 victory.

Neosho, winners of nine straight games now, went ahead 4-0 over the first three innings, by scoring a pair of runs in both the second and third innings.

In the second inning, Jordan Young hit a two-run home run to bring home Austin Paul, who reached on a fielder’s choice, for the first runs of the game.

The next inning, Ty Anderson singled, stole second base and scored on Carter Marion’s two-out RBI double.

Marion then came home when Tanner Pogue followed with an RBI double, making it 4-0.

Pittsburg (16-9) answered with three runs to get back in the contest. Kenny Wachter started things off with a single and moved to second base when Willie Watt delivered a single. Jesse Watt then stepped up and delivered a three-run homer to make it 4-3.

Neosho (21-10) broke the game open with a five-run top of the sixth inning that forced Post 64 to use two pitchers. The Nighthawks received a two-run double from Scott Wilson to drive in the first runs of the inning, which drove in Pogue (walk) and Paul (infield single).

Young followed with an RBI triple to make it 7-3.

With Young at third base, Neosho’s Scooter Lewis, the team’s starting pitcher, laid down a squeeze bunt to bring him home and make it 8-3. Marion capped the scoring with an RBI single, making it 9-3 after five and half innings.

Marion drove in Neosho’s final run with an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning, which scored Anderson, making it 10-3.

Pittsburg’s final run came in the last inning when Drew Beasley started a string of three straight singles, which ended with an RBI base hit from Nate Arnold.

Shane Drenick started for Post 64 throwing the first five innings, before Brett Marshall and Michael Hayes came in and both threw in the sixth inning. Hayes gave way to Arnold after 2 1/3 innings.

Lewis threw all nine innings for the Nighthawks.

“He was doing really well and kept going and kept getting stronger as he pitched,” said Neosho coach Eddie Crupper. “This was his best outing of the summer. He kept them off balance.”

Neosho returns to action Wednesday, playing at Bentonville, Ark., at 6 p.m. That is also the night of the District 15 seeding meeting, where Neosho looks to defend its back-to-back titles.

“I think we are playing our best ball going into districts,” said Crupper.
