A phone call to Crowder College baseball coach Travis Lallemand made by Ouachita Baptist coach Chris Moddelmog got the ball rolling to get Kyle Zimmerman in Arkadelphia, Ark. Crowder’s sophomore second baseman visited the campus and made the choice to become a Tiger, joining one of the better Division II programs in the country.
“Coach Moddelmog (formerly Fort Scott Community College’s coach) called Coach Lallemand and asked who was available and said he was calling about me,” Zimmerman said. “I went down an visited. It’s by Conway (Arkansas). The last three years they have had a really good program and it’s a good opportunity for me. It is kind of a small town and the school isn’t very big. I like the learning atmosphere, your teacher will get to know you and you aren’t just a number on campus.”
Zimmerman was recruited mainly by OBU, Southwest Baptist University and University of Texas-Permian Basin, where former teammate Kevin Enklemann plays.
OBU was 37-20 this past year, and in 2008 played for the Division II national title game and took second place. The native of Four Seasons, Mo., will be a second baseman for the Tigers. This past spring was his first year at second base after being predominately a shortstop.
This summer he is playing for the division-leading Sedalia Bombers in the MINKâLeague. He is a utility player for the team.
Zimmerman, 20, earned a general studies degree from Crowder College. He is the son of Kevin and Tina Zimmerman of Sedalia and Anita and Max Durfee of Four Seasons.
