NEVADA – The Neosho eighth grade girls’ basketball team snapped a bad streak on Thursday night in Nevada.
Behind stellar defense — something that has become a staple of the team — and 16 points from Brooke Stauffer, the Lady Wildcats defeated McDonald County, 31-19 in the third place game of the TriCounty Conference Tournament.
It was the first time that Neosho had placed in the top four of the eight team tournament in five seasons.
“Defensive pressure was the key in that game,” Neosho coach Brandon Smith said. “We were very effective in transition. We limited their opportunities to score with good rebounding. The girls just played really well.”
Other scorers for Neosho were Dehring Scudder with six points, Mady Reiboldt with five, Olivia Cupp with two and Kim Bohnert with two.
Scudder was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
“We played all 11 players in this game,” Smith said. “It really was a total team effort to finish what we started in this tournament.”
Neosho is now 5-8 on the season and they play in the Central Ozark Conference Tournament this week.
