After enduring one 45 and two 30 minute delays, the coaches for Springfield Hillcrest and Willard said enough was enough and called off the third-place game of the Neosho Tournament. The two coaches, according to Neosho coach Steve Schnackenberg, will wrap up the game in the Springfield area at a later time.

Willard held a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The game was slated to start at 4 p.m., but due to the downpour a 45-minute delay occurred, which included some accumulation of hail on the field. About a minute after halftime was over and the second half began, a lightning delay put a halt to the game. At the 17:16 mark in the game, a third lightning delay pushed back the game another 30 minutes.

GAME RECAPS

The tournament started Friday with Joplin blasting Van Buren, Ark., 5-0. Kelsey Sanders scored four goals for the Lady Eagles.

In Saturday’s opener at Lions Field, Joplin won again by defeating Willard 2-0.

Megan Mathison had a goal in the 11th minute and Lauren Copple scored in the 30th minute for Joplin.

The third game of the day saw the Willard Lady Tigers pull out a 1-0 victory over Van Buren. The lone goal in the game came from Ali Appleby in the 20th minute.

Carl Junction and Hillcrest tied 0-0 in overtime in the final pool game.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The title game of the tournament was called after a discussion between Schnackenberg and Joplin coach Ed Miller prior to the start of the third-place game.

Schnackenberg noted the two teams will try to play Friday, somewhere, for the championship game of the tournament.
