It has been a while since Crowder College’s baseball team has been in the NJCAA playoffs.

How long? Seventeen years.

To put that in perspective, the team’s starting freshmen like Tanner Pogue, Kyle Zimmerman, Tanner Stevenson and Bubby Williams were between one and two years old.

The Roughriders join Connors State and Delago (La.) Community College in the South Central playoffs starting Friday in Warner, Okla. The first team to win three games advances to the NJCAA World Series.

Crowder opens with Delgado, out of the New Orleans area, at 3:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., Crowder plays Connors State.

“To be honest, I don’t know a lot about Delgado,” said Crowder coach Travis Lallemand. “I know they have a lot of left-handed hitters, five of them. Not a lot of power, but they are free-swingers.”

Lallemand contacted former Crowder coach Chip Durham, now the head coach at Nicholls State, along with other coaches for a scouting report.

Crowder is more familiar with Connors State, playing them twice this year. Crowder won 12-1 in Warner, while Connors State won 12-11 in Neosho.

“This is a round-robin double-elimination tournament and if everyone is 1-1 at the end of the first day, you flip a coin and the odd man out plays Sunday. The other two will fight it out to play on Sunday. It’s not really fair, but it’s a deal where everyone has to win three games.

“It is great to be three games from the World Series. Like we have said all year the goal was to be playing our best baseball at the end of the year.”

Lallemand noted the Roughriders will go with pitcher  Don Lisi in game one and Dan Golden in game two.

Playing in the field will be the team’s usual lineup. Behind the plate will be Williams.
The infield will consist of Will McGinnis (first base), Stevenson (second base), Zimmerman (shortstop) and Pogue (third base). The outfield will be all sophomores in Richie McVey (left field), Matty Johnson (center field) and Michael Dunlavy (right field).
