UPDATED - DEVASTATION IN NEWTON COUNTY: Tornado causes deaths, damage throughout county

What is being called a massive tornado hit Newton County at approximately 6 p.m. causing destruction to several homes in the area, as well as a confirmed four deaths according to local officials.

According to Newton County officials, 10 are confirmed dead in Newton County after what is being called a "massive" tornado hit Newton County at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday night. Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said numerous people are injured, with injuries ranging from minor to extremely serious. He said one of the worst hit areas was Iris Road and Highway 86, north of Neosho. Also, Lant's Feed Store on Highway 43, north of Seneca, was destroyed. In Newtonia, there is massive damage to home and structures, including the Ritchey Mansion, a Civil War treasure. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to a mortuary in Webb City, according to officials. Three shelters have been set up in the county: Calvary Baptist in Neosho, First Baptist in Diamond, and the Hammons Community Center in Fairview. Heavy damage and destruction is being reported in Seneca, Racine, northern Neosho and Newton County, Granby and Newtonia, where residents are being evacuated. Power is out in several areas of the county as well, including the Daily News office until 10:30 p.m., causing the newspaper to not be able to update its Web site.
