The Mount Vernon Mountaineers rallied for four runs late to help the team pull out a 5-2 victory over East Newton to spoil the Big 8 Conference opener for the Patriots.

East Newton (3-5 overall) scored twice in the first inning to take the lead. 

Taylor Hunt doubled and moved to third base on Blake Hill’s single. Tyler Spencer hit an RBI single to score Hunt and Hill came home on Colby Brown’s RBI single.

Mount Vernon grabbed the lead by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Adam Curl provided the big hit for the Mountaineers, a 2-run single that gave his team a one-run lead. Later in the inning, Robert Michael added an RBI single.

Spencer threw 6 2/3 innings for East Newton and was tagged with the loss.?He yielded seven hits, while striking out six and walking three. Mason Whitman came in to get an out in the seventh inning.

Hunt paced the East Newton offense by going 2-for-4. Clayton Miller added a triple.

The Patriots play next at 5 p.m. Thursday against?Lamar.
