The East Newton R-6 school board heard a report Thursday night regarding the high school’s bus barn, which collapsed on Friday, Feb. 4, due to heavy snow and ice.

“Mr. (Rusty) McDermott, our facilities director, gave a report to the board on the damages and how the proceedings are going, as far as replacing the bus barn,” East Newton R-6 Superintendent Todd McCrackin said. “We are probably more than likely going to be out the deductible for the damages and then the full replacement of the bus barn will be covered by insurance. Then the insurance is going to cover the cost for the some of the minor repairs to the buses. The bus repairs are really minor, there was not much damage to any of the buses.”

At the time of the roof collapse, McCrackin said all nine bus bays were filled. Shortly after the collapse, one of the buses was pulled out. Since the collapse, the bus barn has been dismantled.

The board also amended a date in the school calendar and also approved the new graduation date.

“March 2 was originally going to be a half day of attendance for our students and the reason for the half day was because we were going to have professional development for teachers that day,” he said. “The administrators, myself and a lot of the staff wanted to go ahead and make that a full day of attendance, to make up the instructional time that we had lost due to the snow, because we do have the MAP testing coming up at the end of March and the end-of-course exams coming up in April, first of May.”

The new graduation date was moved from May 9 to May 20. The last day for the other students to attend — at the present time — is May 26, McCrackin said.
