East Newton continued to roll toward the district tournament with a 68-57 Big 8 win over Monett on Friday at the Patriots homecoming game.

After playing even with the Cubs in the first quarter, East Newton opened up a 16-point lead after thumping Monett 25-9 in the second frame.

“I thought it was a great atmosphere for homecoming,” Patriots head coach Barry Yocom said. “Once our kids calmed down and just started playing basketball, I thought we executed our offensive and defensive sets very well.”

Monett climbed a little closer in the second half, outscoring East Newton 36-31 in the final two quarters, but the lead was too great and the Pats coasted to a victory.

Clint Broyles captured game honors with 25 points to lead East Newton.

Other scorers were Brett Black with 19, Will Wheeler 12, Nolan Anderson 9, and Curtiss Babb 3.
East Newton’s next contest will be Tuesday when they travel to Mt. Vernon. The Patriots are now 17-6 overall and 5-1 in the Big 8.
