Members of the American Legion Post 163 are asking for donations to send a 16-year-old to the Missouri Cadet Patrol Academy.

The cadet is Timothy Michael Lloyd Arr of Sarcoxie. The academy being held from June 3-8, conducted at Missouri State Highway Patrol Law Enforcement Academy, Jefferson City, Mo.

“There is no (American) Legion Post where this boy lives, so the application was sent to our commander, Kevin Butler, who turned it over to me,” said Jerry Sherwood, finance officer with the Neosho American Legion Post 163. “The charge is $400, (we have already) received $20. We are looking for more money.”

The deadline is fast approaching to have the money and the application in to the American Legion district chairman by Feb. 12.

“The Missouri Cadet Patrol Academy is to provide first hand experience of the role of our police in promoting and safeguarding American freedoms and rights,” the academy’s website states. “It is hoped that the young men and women who participate in the cadet patrol academy will develop favorable attitudes toward law enforcement and will help disseminate these attitudes throughout the community. Our young people have proven their abilities to think clearly and often to be the staunchest of supporters for moral and legal rights. The academy gives them the opportunity to see law enforcement practices and concepts at their best.”

This is not the first time the local post has sponsored a person going to the academy and Sherwood is pleased they are doing this again.

“I think that it is a great thing for Neosho to do it, it is a great thing for the legion to do and I personally think that it is a very good cause,” he said.

In the event the $400 is not raised, Sherwood stated the post would still send the cadet to the academy.

“No matter what, we can’t afford it, but we can’t afford not to,” he said.
