Doris Elma McCleary, 72, rural Neosho, died peacefully at her home on Feb. 8, 2012, surrounded by family after a five year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.


Doris Elma McCleary, 72, rural Neosho, died peacefully at her home on Feb. 8, 2012, surrounded by family after a five year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.  

She was born Oct. 11, 1939, in Winfield, Kan., and graduated from Stella High School in 1957. Doris graduated from the School of the Ozarks in 1959 and Missouri Southern State College in 1972 with a degree in education. She began her teaching career in a two-room schoolhouse in Competition, Mo., teaching grades 1-4, while husband, Carl, taught grades 5-8. She continued teaching elementary school for nearly 30 years in the East Newton School District, retiring in 1995. She was a rural mail carrier for the Neosho Post Office, 2000-05 and a substitute teacher for the East Newton School District. Carl and Doris raised beef cattle for 43 years. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Missouri State Teachers’ Association. Her hobbies included woodworking, gardening, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.  

Doris married her husband of 52 years, Carl McCleary on Aug. 8, 1959 at Point Lookout, Mo. and he survives of the home.
Additional survivors include a son, Joel Allen McCleary, Lincoln, Neb.; a daughter, Laurel Brock Stebbins, Carl Junction, Mo.; five grandchildren; her mother, Lottie Hinegardner, Columbia, Mo.; sisters, Lois Bogusch, Fort Worth, Texas; Janice Fleischer, Sulphur Springs, Ark.; Jody Calvin, Columbia, Mo., and brothers, Dean Gardner, Bakersfield, Calif.; Gary Hinegardner, Montgomery City, Mo.; Keith Hinegardner, Beaver Creek, Ohio and Fred Hinegardner, Willard, Mo. She was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd McCleary and a brother, Darrell Hinegardner.  

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel in Granby, with Dr. Chad Stebbins officiating. Interment will follow in the Hazel Green Cemetery and serving as pallbearers, Destry Allgood, Patrick Chism, Eric Brock, Roy Welliver, Dale Brashears and Bobby Morris. Grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Clark Funeral Home, Granby, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The casket will be closed at all times.
