The Neosho American Legion Post 163 is sending five area boys to the 73rd session of the American Legion Missouri Boys State event June 16 through 23 in Warrensburg, Mo.

Jerry Sherwood, finance officer for the American Legion post 163, said the legion helps find sponsors to pay for the boys to attend the program. The fee is $450 per student.

Boys State accepts selected high school juniors from across the state. While in the program students create a mock democracy, complete with cities and counties.

Sherwood said the boys can apply through their school, and are recommended by the school principal.

The students selected to attend the program this year are Abraham Laughlin, Aaron Neher, James Styron, Paxton Hill and Payton Cook, all students at East Newton High School.

Sherwood said though applications were provided to the Neosho High School, he did not receive any applicants from the Neosho school district.

He said of the five boys attending, four are still in need of sponsors.

Those interested in helping to sponsor a student’s trip to Boys State can contact Sherwood at 455-2335.
