MOUNT VERNON — Alex Hausmann rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown to lead Mount Vernon to a rousing 54-14 Big 8 Conference victory over East Newton on Friday.

The Mountaineers built a 27-0 lead in the second quarter before the Patriots found the end zone. Shane Williams got it started for Mount Vernon with a 60 yard punt return touchdown to make it 7-0 in the first.

The Mountaineers never looked back.

Hausmann, Mount Vernon’s quarterback, tossed for 90 yards and a score through the air. He and Williams were a force for the Mountaineers. Hausmann followed Williams’ punt return with a 15-yard touchdown run of his own.

Williams would follow with scoring sprints of 3 and 12 yards on the next two drives. The Patriots would then answer, however, on an Ian Plemmons eight yard scamper to make it 27-7. Mount Vernon would add another score on a Denton Thomas 6 yard touchdown reception just before the half to make it 34-7 at the intermission.

Plemmons would go on to add his second rushing touchdown of the contest, a three yard burst, in the second half for the Patriots’ final score. Devin Morris would go on to add a pair of 18 yard touchdown runs and Jacob LaSalle hit paydirt from two yards out to cap the scoring.

It was a tough loss for the Patriots. They remain winless this season at 0-5, 0-4 conference. Rocky Liveoak led the Patriots with 159 combined yards (65 passing, 94 rushing).

Morris racked up 82 yards on the ground for the Mountaineers. Williams ran for 75.

Mount Vernon is now 4-1, 2-1 in the Big 8.
