Jan was born March 31, 1921, in Peoria, Ill. She graduated from Bradley University in Peoria with a teaching degree and while there met her future husband, John Shonkwiler. Following graduation in May, they were married in August 1942.

During World War II, Jan worked as a secretary at Laterno and was proud to be able to make a contribution to her country during the war. In her late 20s, she contracted polio, but never let the illness hold her back from staying active. Following the war, she and her husband, John, operated a large sheep farm in Brimfield, Ill. and in 1960 moved to Neosho, where they purchased a sheep farm.

Jan joined the First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as an elder and a deacon and was active in numerous church activities. She was a member of Chapter JO-PEO and various bridge clubs. Jan was a very giving person, always reaching out to others and sharing her time and "pies". She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Following the death of her husband, John, in 1987, Jan married Orlan Cooley in 1988 and together they shared their retirement years traveling and enjoying life. Orlan survives. Also surviving are two children, Linda Lockwood, Riverside, Mo.; John Scott Shonkwiler and wife, Vanessa, Athens, Ga.; two step sons, Ralph Cooley and wife, Glenda, Conroe, Texas and Bill Cooley and wife, Pattie, Laguna Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren, Tracy Powell and husband, Russell, Leawood, Kan.; Jennifer Krenson, No. Ft. Myers, Fla.; Jessica Gleaton and husband, Jacob, Walnut Creek, Calif.; Erin Nuckolls and husband, Cory, Reno, Nev.; Alyssa Shonkwiler and Trevor Shonkwiler, Athens, Ga.; two step grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew Cooley and six great grandchildren, Lucy, Jack, Mia and Quincy Powell; Cash Krenson, Damien Nuckolls and a step great grandchild Noah. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Marna.

Services will be Friday, April 19, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Neosho, Rev. Richard Williams will officiate. Interment will be in the Neosho IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Home, Neosho on Thursday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and the family will receive friends Friday at the church from 1 p.m. until service time. Contributions in memory of Jan may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Neosho or the National Alzheimer's Association, c/o Clark Funeral Home, P.O. Box 66, Neosho, 64850.
