Two Newton County Jail inmates facing murder charges now face an additional county in connection with an alleged incident at the jail.
Bryant L. Sykes Jr., 26, and Damon A. Williams, 23, are accused of forcible sodomy in connection with an incident that took place in late March at the jail.
The two are accused of holding a third inmate down and violating him with a partial roll of toilet paper.
On Feb. 7, Sykes pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the death of an 18-month-old girl, Ada Bowman. The toddler was his girlfriend’s daughter, and died at her home at the Bykota Mobile Home Park in northern Newton County. Sykes told authorities he threw the girl on a bed, and she bounded off of it and hit a coffee table.
Sykes has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Williams is awaiting trial in the shooting death of Charles Tumbleson, 25, of Joplin, at a Joplin nightspot in August 2012. Police said Williams confronted Tumbleson outside the club and shot the man three times, then shot him three more times as he lay on the pavement.
