East Newton High School rallied to put points on the board late in the game, but the Patriots still fell to the Mt. Vernon Mountaineers, 45-20, in a road game Friday.

A bad snap caught East Newton quarterback Chance Liveoak in the end zone for the Mountaineers first score, a safety. Then Payton Oehlschlager ran 30 yards for a Mountaineer touchdown. The extra point was good, making it 9-0 Mountaineers.
But with 2:05 left in the first quarter, Liveoak pushed his way past the Mountaineer D to make it 9-6.

Mt. Vernon came back with just seconds left in the first as Garrett Hadcock connected with Jeffrey Shuster on a 33-yard touchdown pass.

Midway through the second quarter, Oehlschlager caught a short pass and added a 32-yard carry for a touchdown for the Mountaineers.

Later in the quarter, Mount Vernon intercepted an East Newton pass, then capitalized on the turnover with a 2-yard pass for another score to make it 30-6 as the first half ended.

The Mountaineers began the second half with a four-play, 61-yard touchdown drive, making it 37-6 with less than two minutes elapsed in the third quarter.

Haddock then had a quarterback keeper and ran 19 yards for a touchdown to bring it to 45-6 Mt. Vernon.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Patriots began to rally back. Taking the pitch, Dayton Clouse carried the pigskin six yards for a touchdown and brought the score to 45-12.
Then with 3:30 left to play, Liveoak fired a pass to Coleman Booker for a touchdown, then had the 2-point conversion to make it 45-20.
