GRANBY — A group of American History students at East Newton High School recently completed a veterans quilt with the assistance of the Merry Makers Quilting Club of Newton County, based in Newtonia.
The students contacted the Missouri Veterans Home in Mt. Vernon to request names of veterans for a class project. The students wrote letters and sent cards to the veteran throughout the school year.
Many of the heroes at the home shared interesting stories about their childhoods and service to the country. The students incorporated these life stories into history and geography classes as they located various places around the world where veterans had served.
As a way to express their gratitude to the veterans, each student selected a patriotic design to be included in a quilt of honor. The students crafted their individual quilt blocks and began sewing the pieces together.
To complete the project, Ruth Hunke and Erline Hoeppner of the Merry Makers Club volunteered to quilt the project by hand. The students were invited to visit Hoeppner’s home and participate in the hand-quilting process.
