Crowder College 3-D art students completed a unique project by creating trophies for the upcoming Roughrider Car Show April 22 out of auto parts.
Each student had access to various automotive parts, most donated by the Crowder Auto Tech Program, Darrel’s Engine Shop (Darrel Epperson), and Griffith Motors. Some parts were left over from last year when the students completed the same project.
“Last year, we went out to the salvage yards to collect our own parts,” 3-D art student and sculptor Nathaniel Thomas said. “This year, we had many parts to choose from.”
Thomas along with art students Casey Smith, Zoe Mc Coy, and Dalton Epperson each created several sculptures to use as trophies for the upcoming car show. Epperson and his dad, Darrel Epperson, owner of Darrel’s Engine Shop, did the welding for the pieces.
The idea to create car show trophies from auto parts came from a former auto tech instructor on campus but the Crowder College Foundation decided to continue the tradition.
Trophies will be awarded in several categories including President’s Choice with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place categories, People’s Choice and Student’s Choice, each with three categories, Foundation’s Choice, Rowdy Roughrider’s Choice and Trustee’s Choice.
“I originally liked to draw,” Thomas said. “Then I took 3-D design class and now I love to sculpture.”
The trophies will be awarded at the annual Crowder College Foundation Roughrider Car Show on the Neosho campus Saturday, April 22. The event is sponsored by Paragon, Architecture, Southwest Missouri Bank, Stouffer Racing, and Griffith Motors and presented by Don Wessel Honda. The car show will be held from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m. Admission is free for spectators. In addition to the automotive line-up, there will be music, a raffle, great food, and a 50/50 pot.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Crowder College Foundation. All cars and trucks are welcome for a $20 advance fee and $25 at the gate on the day of the car show.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and awards will be given at 2:30 p.m.
