GRANBY — A fun-filled event will take place in Granby starting today and running through Sunday.

GRANBY — A fun-filled event will take place in Granby starting today and running through Sunday.
Old Mining Town Days (OMTD) - which has been going on for about 35 years - will kick off events at 5 p.m. with music at Dick Smith Park, Granby.
At 6 p.m., the welcoming ceremony and fly over by Steve Burnett will commence, followed by Little Mr. and Miss  Miner Pageant at 6:15 p.m., music resuming at 6:30 p.m. and the honored citizen named at 7:30 p.m., all at Dick Smith Park. Also, 6 p.m. (at Sports Park - east of Granby) will hold a 10-U and 12-U baseball tournament.
"The main purpose is to celebrate Granby's heritage," said Joe Guinn, parks and recreation director for the City of Granby. "Families now for (more than ) 35 years or so have (scheduled) their vacations and their gatherings (to come here). It is a coming home celebration for Granby."
Someone will be named the Granby Honored Citizen at 7:30 p.m., Friday, which is a time change from years past.
"We have always done it at the opening acts," he said. "One of the reasons to push it back was simply on Friday night, it takes a while to build into Friday night compared to Saturday and Sunday. With that being one of the opening acts, we are hoping for a better gathering, a larger crowd."
Guinn said there will be also a carnival all three days, kicking off in Dick Smith Park at 6 p.m. daily.
Saturday will be the bulk of activities with a couple of locations.
A pancake feed will start at 6 a.m. at the Granby Fire Department - hosted by the East newton High School volleyball team, followed at 7 a.m. for the 5k also starting at the Granby Fire Department hosted by the Granby Lions Club. At 8 a.m., the car and tractor show will be held at the Sports Complex. Some of the activities at Dick Smith Park include the horseshoe contest (9 a.m.), Pet Parade (10 a.m.), an all school reunion from 1-4 p.m. at Granby Elementary School, the parade begins at 4 p.m., at 5 p.m. there will be a Granby's Miner's Museum. Other events include music, a sand volleyball tournament. Events for Saturday will end at 10 p.m.
There will be two ballgames at Sports Complex with the Old Timer Softball game at 1 p.m. and the Old Timers Baseball game at 2 p.m. Gospel music will start at 5:30 p.m. at Dick Smith Park, with music from 7-9 p.m. by Duke Mason Band.
Caping off the night will be the fireworks from 9:15 to 9:30 p.m. at Dick Smith Park.
"Bring their lawn chairs and blankets and camp out on the hillside there (in Dick Smith Park)," Guinn said. "Just bring the family and have a good evening."
