Thirty-six years ago, the class of '83 graduated from Neosho High School and this year a group of classmates decided to give something back by awarding a graduating senior a scholar, planned to be the first of many.

The idea of creating an annual scholarship came from class member Jeff Brodie. When he shared it with his former class, the response was nothing short of amazing.

Doug Hunt, NHS Class of '83, served as this year's Chair of the inaugural 1983 NHS Scholarship Selection Committee along with 4 others and 2 alternates.

There were fifteen applicants and according to Hunt, choosing one was a difficult and emotional challenge.

As he presented the award to senior Kenneth Lopez, Hunt noted that all 15 students who applied were outstanding candidates. A number of 1983 NHS grads attended the Baccalaureate and the Senior Awards Assembly that followed.

"It's truly a moment of Wildcat Pride for our Neosho High School Class of 1983," Hunt said.

The group hopes that other alumni classes may follow suit and create additional scholarships for future graduating Wildcats.
